Marketing Blog#4 – Web Marketing Techniques

There are several different marketing techniques that can be used when trying to market a product which can directly apply to the marketing of my game project. In today’s blog I will be covering 3 marketing techniques and discussing display media advertising. The first technique that I will be covering is the AIDA technique, AIDA stands for:

  • Attention
  • Interest
  • Desire
  • Action

The acronym used describes the goal of most marketing and especially web marketing. In order to convince a potential customer to purchase my game I will need to follow the steps of AIDA. Attention – my website must grab customers and potential customers attention otherwise my game will not get noticed. Interest – If my website does not pique customer interest, they will quickly leave my website, in order to achieve this my website will have attractive visuals and eye-catching texts. Desire- In order to achieve this, I will need to include more informative texts and strong visuals to make the customer want to play my game. Finally, Action – Having a customer want to play my game is all well and good but if I don’t make it clear that the game is available, they won’t know it’s available to purchase.

The second technique I will be talking about is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), this is vital to making it more likely for players to find my website by directly searching for it or finding it from related terms. For example, in my case my game has a strong aspect of time travelling so if I give my web page a subtitle of “a time-travelling puzzle game” when anyone searches for a time-travelling game my game should appear on the results. The third technique I will be talking about is Content Marketing, this piece of marketing serves a purpose other than getting someone to buy my game, it is often educational but can also be some sort of entertainment and draws potential customers into the world of my game.

Lastly, I will be discussing Display Media Advertising, this is a form of marketing that uses texts, logos and animations, videos, images and other graphics. These can be used on websites, videos and mobile apps, media advertising is a more traditional form of marketing and is paid advertisement and generally not sought out by the viewer.  “The aim is to “re-target” them and encourage them to return to the website to take the same action (or an action at a different stage of the funnel).” (Whatley, 2020)
