Marketing Blog#8 –Affiliate Marketing

In today’s blog I will be talking about Affiliate Marketing. With the age of the internet amongst us this piece of marketing typically takes the form of a Let’s Play or Review on live streams or videos on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. It can however include things such as E-sports and Speed Running. Essentially, Affiliate Marketing is publicity for a product generated by a third party with an existing audience. Affiliate Marketing is a fantastic piece of Marketing as you are accessing a ready-made and interested audience who has bought into the affiliates content already. Streaming services now have influencers who have a following fan base that trust and watch them daily. “The best thing about affiliate marketing is that you can do it at scale. A typical salesperson only sells products from one company. As an affiliate marketer, you can promote products from many different companies and earn commissions from all of them.” (Ong, 2020)

In order to promote my game, my uncle is a known youtuber with over 40K subscribers on YouTube by playing and reviewing games. I could use this as a marketing strategy as I can personally ask my uncle to play and review my game on his channel with a link in the descriptions section for others to play it if they enjoy it. This would be perfect for myself as it won’t have any cost and can allow my game and company to get amazing coverage.

Costs and Expenses

Affiliate Marketing costs can vary wildly depending on the size of the audience for each affiliate. If the affiliate is small, sometimes a free game key is all that is needed to entice an affiliate to cover your game on their channel.  If the affiliate is large and known, then this is when costs can start to come into equation as they may require a payment to cover the game.
